In a world which emphasises individuality and difference, I hope 2023 will be a year when we reach out across what divides and separates us from one another. Itâs time to heal the split between head and heart, between friend and stranger: a time for connection.
Compassion is the most effective antidote to aggression: instead of opting immediately for retaliation, take a moment to empathise with the other person.
Other peopleâs approval of you is gratifying while it lasts but problems arise when the need for it outweighs your ability to exercise choice.
Notice the emotional signals your body sends you â they are an invaluable guide to effective communication.
None of us can be blamed for what we feel â but we are responsible for how act on those feelings.
Expressing anger is essential for our psychological and physical health: aggression does nothing but harm.
Criticism can be informative and invaluable â if we learn first to listen to it and then respond appropriately.
Take the time to experience silence every day, even for a few minutes: reach inside and remind yourself of who you are, the constant âyouâ in the midst of all the roles you undertake in your life.
Isolation undermines self-empowerment: take the risk of reaching out to share with others.
One thing that matters above all is not to hide from the truth of any situation, even if you canât change it: denial and pretence always weaken self-esteem.
Never underestimate the transformative power of communicating with someone genuinely as an equal human being.
If you resonate with Anne Dickson‘s powerful message, you should try reading A Woman in Your Own Right, the pioneering handbook for female assertiveness â an indispensable guide to stating what you feel and want.
“The classic assertiveness bible” Guardian
In her pioneering handbook, Dickson draws on her long experience of in-person training to give all women the practical skills and tools we need to assert what we feel and want, manage difficult conversations, avoid being sidetracked by culturally learned behaviours, say âNoâ, and find self-acceptance.

The death of a 16-year-old, dressed as an âImmortal Knightâ and having taken a fatal overdose, proves a perplexing case in the ancient city of Tours. Juge dâinstruction Matthieu Lombard is brought in to lead the investigation.
When the adolescentâs death is followed a few weeks later by the gruesome murder of a firebrand author, Lombard senses a malign coercive force behind the two fatalities, one that succeeds in challenging his own loyalties and assumptions.
What is it that is nagging at Lombard, locked away in the past? What soon becomes clear is that this game is beyond roleplay. It is deadly.

`The emotional heart of On Thin Ice lies in peopleâs reaction to the unfolding catastrophe of war... The book reads like a thriller. What a gripping film it would make.` @spectator1828
Wonderful review for On Thin Ice by @cwexplore!
We are over the moon with the news that The Escape from Kabul by Karen Bartlett @karenbartlett2014 has been awarded the 2026 Orwell Prize for Political Writing @theorwellprize
The Escape from Kabul is a gripping story of rescue, survival and female solidarity.
In the twenty years since 2001, Afghan women obtained legal degrees, became judges and set out to transform their country â tackling corruption, and reducing horrifying levels of violence against women and children. These educated and powerful women led the mission to build a modern democracy.
However, when Western forces withdrew in August 2021, the women judges of Afghanistan and their families faced mortal danger.
The Escape from Kabul is the never-before-told story of the escape of nearly 200 women and their families, thanks to a network of professional friends, female judges and lawyers from around the world, who refused to abandon them to the Taliban.
Hereâs what the prize judges had to say:
âItâs taut and crisp, and shines a light on a story that deserves attention. The plight of Afghanistanâs immensely brave female judges in the face of Islamic fundamentalism is a gripping tale - and Karen Bartlett tells it with deep reserves of empathy and compassion. The book is truly Orwellian in the most positive sense, and a richly merited winner.â
We won the @theorwellprize for Political Writing! Congratulations @karenbartlett2014.
The Escape from Kabul is the story of an international network of female judges and lawyers who evacuated women from Afghanistan as the Taliban retook the country.

âIn early 2022, Charlie Walker set out to hike 600 miles along the frozen rivers of Siberia. He hoped to cut through the myth of the gulag and the permafrost to understand who its people are and how they reckon with their haunted past, as well as what the future might hold for this remote corner of our world. But on 24 February, Russia invaded Ukraine, with devastating consequences. What had begun as an adventure swiftly descended into a paranoid nightmare, as Walker began to suspect he was being monitored by the Russian authorities. Shortly afterwards he was arrested and imprisoned.
On Thin Ice juxtaposes the harsh beauty of a Siberian winter with a thriller-like series of events that exposes the dark heart of Putinâs propaganda machine. It is both the extraordinary record of one manâs walk through the most inhospitable place on earth and a powerful insight into a deeply troubled â and troubling â nation.â
Happy publication day to @cwexplore and his new book On Thin Ice: An Explorer`s Memoir of Siberia, Surveillance and Survival.
`This almost insanely intrepid and dangerous trek in remotest Siberia is astonishing in itself. But it also brings invaluable experience of Russian reactions to the war against Ukraine. Altogether extraordinary` Colin Thubron, author of The Amur River
`I was hooked from the very first, chilling words. On Thin Ice reads more like a Soviet-era spy thriller than travelogue, full of derring-do, panache, but also â importantly â insight` Benedict Allen, author of Explorer
`A remarkable book... Walker is the best of guides: curious, honest, humble... It does what the best travel books should do, providing a unique and captivating insight into an utterly unknown world` Adam Weymouth, author of Lone Wolf
On Thin Ice is out now in all good bookshops and online.

Happy publication day to Ian Moore! Death and Deja Vu, the sixth in his Times bestselling Follet Valley Mysteries series, is available now in hardback, ebook and audio.
Richard Ainsworth moved to rural France to escape, so being voted mayor of the small town of Saint-Sauver comes as a terrible shock. Fortunately bureaucracy has its benefits and he is shipped off to a health spa to recuperate.
The Esprit de lâAir is a world-famous venue on an island fort off the west coast of France, and was chosen specifically by his business partner and bounty hunter of international repute, ValĂ©rie dâOrçay. Richard should have been prepared then.
After a dramatic first night where a bizarre and unfriendly group of guests are pitched against each other, Richardâs film-historian mind wanders. Has he seen this all before? And when the first body turns up, he knows he hasâŠ
