In a world which emphasises individuality and difference, I hope 2023 will be a year when we reach out across what divides and separates us from one another. It’s time to heal the split between head and heart, between friend and stranger: a time for connection.
Compassion is the most effective antidote to aggression: instead of opting immediately for retaliation, take a moment to empathise with the other person.
Other people’s approval of you is gratifying while it lasts but problems arise when the need for it outweighs your ability to exercise choice.
Notice the emotional signals your body sends you – they are an invaluable guide to effective communication.
None of us can be blamed for what we feel – but we are responsible for how act on those feelings.
Expressing anger is essential for our psychological and physical health: aggression does nothing but harm.
Criticism can be informative and invaluable – if we learn first to listen to it and then respond appropriately.
Take the time to experience silence every day, even for a few minutes: reach inside and remind yourself of who you are, the constant ‘you’ in the midst of all the roles you undertake in your life.
Isolation undermines self-empowerment: take the risk of reaching out to share with others.
One thing that matters above all is not to hide from the truth of any situation, even if you can’t change it: denial and pretence always weaken self-esteem.
Never underestimate the transformative power of communicating with someone genuinely as an equal human being.
If you resonate with Anne Dickson‘s powerful message, you should try reading A Woman in Your Own Right, the pioneering handbook for female assertiveness – an indispensable guide to stating what you feel and want.
“The classic assertiveness bible” Guardian
In her pioneering handbook, Dickson draws on her long experience of in-person training to give all women the practical skills and tools we need to assert what we feel and want, manage difficult conversations, avoid being sidetracked by culturally learned behaviours, say ‘No’, and find self-acceptance.

The event will dig into Louis D. Hall’s brilliant debut In Green: a terrific travelling adventure in the style of Patrick Leigh Fermor, telling of Louis’s decision to fulfil a childhood dream inspired by Don Quixote – to make an uncharted journey on horseback. This really is a glorious piece of rich, romantic travel writing that takes the reader along old paths, into ancient villages, sharing rural homes and stables of farmers and shepherds in the Ligurian Alps, Pyrenees, Basque country and Galician coast, which also digs deep into the relationship between animal and human.
Charlie Walker will be interviewing. Charlie`s amazing new travelogue On Thin Ice: An Explorer’s Memoir of Siberia, Surveillance and Survival, will be released early, specially for this talk.

In Green - A Journey to the End of the Land by @louis.d.hall
`An awe-inspiring tale of adventure, grit, and the deep bond between man, horse and nature – a story that will stir the soul of every reader
who dreams of pushing beyond the horizon` Alastair Humphreys, author of Microadventures
In his mid-twenties, city-bound and restless, Louis D. Hall found himself uncertain. How to create a life he wanted to lead? Inspired by Don Quixote, he decided to fulfil a childhood dream – to make an uncharted journey on horseback.
After finding his horse, Sasha, in Italy’s Apennine Mountains, Louis set off and headed west. His destination: Cape Finisterre, ‘the end of the land’. For three weeks Louis and Sasha survived storms, snow, wolves and the untrodden partisan paths of the Ligurian Alps. But then a young woman arrived with her horse, Istia, and their solitary world was broken. Kiki, adrift with the death of her sibling, joined the journey, and the duo continued together.
With every step and every fall, the pair are forced to unfold and trust in their horses and, eventually, each other. Using old and forgotten routes, guided by strangers and nature’s clues, the travellers unravel into a wilder way of life; united by the mysteries of the horse, enticed by the illusions of adventure.

`This almost insanely intrepid and dangerous trek in remotest Siberia is astonishing in itself. But it also brings invaluable experience of Russian reactions to the war against Ukraine. Altogether extraordinary` Colin Thubron, author of The Amur River

Happy Publication Day to @felicityspector and her wonderful book Bread & War, which is now available in paperback.
This is a journey through Ukraine; its mine-ridden, wrecked villages, repeatedly bombed cities, family kitchens and precarious small bakeries and cafes. Along the way Felicity shares meals with soldiers, travels supply lines with volunteers and is fed incredible food by army cooks, fine bakers and home-cooking heroes.
The extraordinary stories of just some of those people - refugees and restaurateurs - trying to rebuild lives and kitchens after years of bombing, shows a very Ukrainian determination to provide good food for a besieged people.

How fabulous was last night’s @indies_alliance spring showcase? Oodles of talented authors mingling with the great and the good of UK bookselling.
Copies of I’ll be the Monster were on display and went fast, snapped up on the promise of a sensational new voice and a lavish quote from @lucyrose (cannot thank her enough!).
We’re grateful to be part of the Alliance where like minded publishers can closely collaborate to do the hard work of championing literary voices that might otherwise never get their shot at publishing.
Events like these show how much joy and opportunity still exists for indie publishers and bookshops in an increasingly challenging economic landscape.
Remember to support your local indie booksellers - they need us now more than ever! 📚

Delighted by @dwaynefields’ recommendation of ‘The Untold Railway Stories’ on @bbcsounds - edited by globetrotting, train travel expert @monisha_rajesh
There’s a portion of the interview in which Dwayne talks about living through homelessness and having to sleep on the Central Line. Trains represent so much to so many of us, whether that’s taking us on an exciting new adventure or to the office on our daily commute, or as shelter when you have nowhere else to go.
If you enjoy stories of train travel and history, explore our book: The Untold Railway Stories.
